Neuroma

What is a Neuroma?
  • A neuroma is a painful nerve irritation found in the ball of the foot
  • It is a benign growth of nerve tissue between the metatarsals
  • It leads to pain, burning, tingling or numbness between the toes and in the ball of the foot
Causes?
  • Biomechanical instability around the toes caused by a flat or high arched foot can cause a neuroma to develop
  • Shoes that are tight or high heeled can cause pressure and aggravate the condition
Treatment
  • Footwear – shoes with a wide toe box, low heel and adjustable laces or buckles
  • Your Podiatrist can help reduce pressure and therefore generally reduce pain in the area with the use of padding and taping and possibly foot orthotics
  • Some cases require referral to consider surgical options
